Electrical Safety Tips You Need to Stay Safe During a Thunderstorm

Most people feel safe and secure the moment they step inside during a thunderstorm. After all, walls, windows, and a sturdy roof provide enough shelter from the rain, wind, and lightning - right? While it’s true that being indoors is much safer than standing under a tree or out in an open field, that sense of security can sometimes lead to a dangerous level of complacency.

Thunderstorms can, and often do, impact the inside of homes and businesses, especially through electrical systems. If you live in Fort Worth, TX, or any of the surrounding areas, you’ve likely experienced your fair share of lightning storms. Going forward, let's make sure you're safer.

The guys were super nice, I loved that they did the work immediately. Also after having a discussion with them about the static electricity from a lightenimg strike we had and it fried everything they suggested a surge protector to keep that from happening again. So we did that.

Scheduled an appointment with Mr Electric of Fort Worth and received a call  they were able to show up early and had Dylan show up on time stocked with a full truck. He was able to diagnosis the issue quickly and restore my power to a few plugs that were causing the breakers to trip continuously. Dylan was very knowledgable, clearly explained the cause and how he would fix the issue, and addressed all concerns that we had. He was replaced two breakers and installed 2 new outlets along with diagnosing the problem in about an hour. Very quick and so far seems to have resolved our electrical issue. Would definitely recommend Mr Electric of Fort Worth!

Dylan was so nice and always on time. Very qualified and explained everything he needed to do in a way I understood. My older house required an outside panel so I had a lot of work but Dylan and his helper worked together very well and finished on time so I was not out of power more than needed. Everything looked and worked great when done. I don't know how he was able to replace the cracked power pole and wiring on my roof so quickly and beautifully. I am very, very impressed with his skill level and would request him for any future work. The company is very well organized and office contact was a pleasure to work with(which is rare since these positions are usually underpaid)so reward her well, she is the "door" to your organization. She and Dylan sealed my deal!

Cody was professional, knowledgeable, and was able to provide me with a quick diagnosis pertaining to a wiring issue in one of my rooms. He gave me the price for the repair/modification and fixed the issue all in less than an hour. Thanks Cody!

In this brief article brough to you by Mr. Electric, we share five fundamental electrical safety tips to help protect your home, loved ones, and electronics during thunderstorms. If you'd rather consult with a certified electrician, then contact Mr. Electric to schedule a convenient appointment today.

Unplug Electronics Before the Storm Hits

Lightning can cause power surges that travel through wiring and damage televisions, computers, gaming consoles, and even kitchen appliances. So, one of the simplest but most effective ways to prevent damage during a thunderstorm is to unplug your electronics.

As a matter of fact, power surges related to lightning account for hundreds of millions of dollars in property damage every year in the U.S, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Don’t wait until thunder is shaking the windows. If a storm is in the forecast for Fort Worth or nearby cities, take a few minutes to unplug vulnerable electronics just to be safe.

Avoid Water and Plumbing Fixtures

It might sound odd, but your home’s plumbing can actually become a dangerous conductor during a lightning storm. Water pipes - especially metal ones - can carry electricity. That means activities like washing your hands, doing dishes, or taking a shower during a thunderstorm can be risky.

Lightning doesn’t need to strike your home directly to travel through plumbing; it just needs to hit nearby and enter through underground utilities or wires. If you hear thunder, it’s best to wait until the storm passes before using sinks, tubs, or appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.

Stay Away from Electrical Panels and Appliances

Your electrical panel is the central hub of your home’s electrical system, and it’s not something you want to be near during a lightning storm. If lightning induces a power surge, the panel will very likely be affected and anyone near it could be at risk.

The same goes for large appliances like refrigerators, washers, dryers, and HVAC systems. These equipment are not only susceptible to surge damage, but using them during a storm could expose you to electric shock. If you notice signs of electrical damage (like burning smells, sparking outlets, or flickering lights), then contact a certified electrician immediately.

Use Surge Protectors, But Don’t Rely Solely on Them

Surge protectors are an important layer of defense, but they aren’t foolproof. Basic surge strips can only handle so much voltage, and a powerful lightning strike can overwhelm them. For optimal protection, consider installing a whole-house surge protector. These devices are installed at your electrical panel and provide broader protection.

Schedule an Electrical Inspection After Major Storms

Not all storm damage is immediately obvious. A lightning strike can cause hidden damage to your electrical system, and this type of unseen damage can lead to serious safety issues if not addressed. That’s why it’s wise to schedule a post-storm electrical service inspection - especially if your home experienced a close lightning strike, power surge, or outage.
